Jennifer Blancks article, Officer Training
Again! Whats in it for
you?
WHY PARTICIPATE IN TLI WINTER TRAINING?
For those of you who attended
TLI during the summer season, here are just a few
reasons to attend club officer training in the
winter:
- There is a lot to
learn at the second round of club officer
training.
- When at least 4 of
your club officers are trained in the winter, and 4 were
trained in the summer, your club achieves Goal #9 of
the Distinguished Club Program
(DCP). . . and, more importantly, this
commitment is one component of a healthy Toastmasters
club.
- A healthy club is one
where the officers have been trained, the members are
working towards their personal communication development
goals by regularly delivering speeches, and the members
are working towards their personal leadership development
goals.
- Newly elected
officers have the opportunity to:
- learn the basic
responsibilities of their new role
- meet district
leaders and others who can assist them during their
terms
- discover and share
ideas that can help them improve their
clubs
- Continuing officers
have the opportunity to:
- participate in
training sessions to complement their core
training
- discuss with
district and other club officers the challenges their
clubs may be facing
- share experiences
and solutions for these challenges with fellow club
officers
- Different electives
may be offered
- Statistics show that
clubs with 4 or more officers trained achieve the other
DCP goals much more easily.
- When all 7 officers
are trained, your club earns a golden ribbon (can be
attached to the club's banner).
Which
officer class should you attend?
Toastmasters generally requires
that you take the officer class for the club office you
currently hold, even if you have taken a class for that
office during summer TLI (or during previous
years).
Here are the
specifics:
- President, VPE, VPM and
VPPR, to receive winter TLI credit, must attend the
specific 2-hour officer training for their club
office.
- Our training will focus on the
officers questions and the challenges theyve
encountered, as well as successes they have experienced.
We think they will benefit from listening and interacting
with other Toastmasters holding the same
office.
- Secretary and Treasurer who did
NOT attend summer TLI for their office: Must attend 2
hour combined Secretary/Treasurer class.
- Sergeant-at-Arms (SAA) who did
NOT attend summer TLI for SAA: Must attend either the
SAA class or the VPM class.
- Treasurer, Secretary, and SAA
who DID attend TLI training in the summer: They can
attend any officer class, or they can attend one of two
leadership training classes held concurrently with the
officer training. These 2-hour training classes are taken
from the Success/Leadership and Success/Communication
series and will help them grow and improve as leaders in
their club. A handout with tips and reminders for the
next six months in their officer position will be
available.
- Note that the summer TLI training
credit was for that person who held that office in the
summer. Officers who have been elected or appointed since
the summer must attend their officer training class to
receive winter TLI credit, even if their predecessor
attended training last summer.
Thanks! Have a great Toastmasters
year!
